Congratulations to Meadow’s Edge Elementary School teacher Emily Williams, who has been named this year’s recipient of the P-H-M Education Foundation’s Jeneane Arter Excellence in Education Award.

In collaboration with the PHM Education Foundation, The Arter Award, established in honor of Northpoint Elementary School teacher Jeneane Arter, recognizes an outstanding P-H-M educator who has made a meaningful impact on students’ lives. The award is especially unique because it is student-nominated—students submit essays highlighting how their teacher has positively shaped their educational experience.

Emily Williams was surprised today with a special visit from PHMEF Executive Director Jennifer Turnbloom and Darla Lippert with a presentation of the $2,000 award, which is generously underwritten by Jason and Darla Lippert.

This honor reflects the heartfelt appreciation of the students whose nomination essays praised Ms. Williams’ dedication, support, and ability to make learning enjoyable and meaningful. Her commitment to her students has left a lasting impression—and now, she joins an esteemed group of educators recognized for excellence in P-H-M.

For the 12th consecutive year, Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation was named among the 2025’s Best Communities for Music Education (​BCME) in the country by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation! P-H-M has received this recognition more than any other school district in Indiana!

This year NAMM has named 935 school districts as the nation’s Best Communities for Music Education, and P-H-M is one of them! The award program recognizes and celebrates outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education. Designations are made to districts that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment to and access to music education. 

In P-H-M elementary schools, music class is part of the regular curriculum following state standards. Students are instructed in both vocal and instrument classes. Beginning in 6th grade, P-H-M students at our three middle schools (Discovery, Schmucker and Grissom) have the opportunity to choose choir, orchestra or band as their music elective. Students at Discovery also have the option of choosing Piano Lab. Schools from elementary all the way up to Penn High School also perform musicals.

Penn High School offers the Fine Arts & Communication Academy as part of its unique academy structure. The seven academy design provides Penn students with relevant and meaningful coursework taught in smaller, supportive environments where each student is known well by his teacher and peers. Nearly a third of Penn’s total 3,500 students are enrolled in the Fine Arts Academy with the majority being involved with music programs, either Choir, Orchestra, Band or another music program.

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, P-H-M answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. Research into music education continues to demonstrate educational/cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music.

In a series of landmark studies by scientists and researchers at Northwestern University a link was found between students in community music programs and life-long academic success, including higher high school graduation rates and college attendance. In another study from the University, it was discovered that the benefits of early exposure to music education improves how the brain processes and assimilates sounds, a trait that lasts well into adulthood. Beyond the Northwestern research, other studies have indicated that music education lays the foundation for individual excellence in group settings, creative problem solving and flexibility in work situations, as well learning how to give and receive constructive criticism to excel.

The annual one mile run for P-H-M fourth and fifth graders is held at Penn’s Cross-country course, which is located behind Elm Road Elementary School. The race is sponsored by P-H-M’s Education Foundation,

This event encourages fitness, healthy choices and wellness. Fourth and fifth graders, from all 11 P-H-M elementary schools are encouraged to sign up for the free running club. Designated coaches at each school are then tasked with training the runners for the 6-week club which then culminates with the Running is Elementary one mile race.

More than 500 students participated this year! The students are cheered on by their fellow students, their families, principals, teachers and running coaches; it’s amazing to see the dedication and hard work the students put in to complete the race. Click here to see the full photo gallery below.

Cindy Batalis, Mary Frank P.E. teacher, began the yearly tradition of Running Is Elementary back in 2008. Batalis’ own love for running and her desire to pass that love on to students is evident in the passion she puts into the Running is Elementary event each year.

Screen Free Week is coming up the week of May 5! 

We have many events planned that week to encourage students to put down screens and engage in other enjoyable activities with family and friends. One of those events is or “Picnic On the Playground” on May 5 at 6:00 p.m. Families should bring their own picnic dinner along with a blanket or chairs and meet us out on the playground for an evening of family, friends, and FUN!  

We also will take time at this event to open up a time capsule that was created by Meadow’s Edge students approximately 25 years ago. This time capsule has been stored safely in the Meadow’s Edge loft for many years. Spray-painted on the side of it is the special message, “Open 2025.” The time is here! 

Join us to see what students from 25 years ago thought were important to leave as a memory and message for our students and families at MEE today.  We look forward to seeing the history and information revealed.

Limited parking is available at Elm Road School. Overflow parking is at Grissom Middle School with shuttle buses running to Elm Road School. 

PARENTS: Please give yourselves plenty of time to arrive and get parked. You may end up having to park at Grissom and take the shuttle. Please follow the signs for parking at Grissom; school is still in session and releases at 4:00 p.m.

Spectators who park at Elm Road may be asked to wait to pull out of the lot if student runners are on the course. Please do not get impatient with volunteers; this is for our students’ safety.

The annual event, held March 25th at Penn High School, is a competition between 3^rd, 4^th, and 5^th grade student teams from all 11 elementary schools compete. The number of points between the placing teams are within just points of each other!

The teams spend weeks preparing for Spell Bowl with their teacher coaches. They may study word lists, learn about derivations (e.g., Latin roots) and rules (e.g., capitalization, pluralization), and how to spell correctly under pressure.

The format of the Spell Bowl is more like a written test. The emcee reads a word and uses the word in a sentence, the students listen and then write it on paper within a 15-second time limit. The students’ written entries are reviewed by a panel of judges and then their score is posted in front of the audience. Each correct word spelling is worth one point.

The annual event is held in Penn High School’s Center for Performing Arts to not only accommodate all the student teams, but also the students’ “fans,” which are their family, friends and other staff from their home schools!

Mrs. Franca Peluso Mulhern, P-H-M’s High Ability Coordinator, manages the Spell Bowl and works to assure that it is a positive and enriching experience for students. Academic competition can give students confidence, increase their motivation to sharpen their skills and abilities, and expand their opportunities to receive recognition.

Congratulations to all the student teams and coaches; they put in a lot of time and hard work!

On Thursday, March 20th, our gymnasium was filled with music as second and third-grade students took the stage for their “Oceans of Fun” concert. The performance featured a lively selection of songs led by Music Teacher Mrs. Sarah Claeys.

In the afternoon, the young performers showcased their talents for their classmates, giving the entire school a chance to enjoy the music. Later in the evening, the students will take the stage again for a special performance for their families and friends.

Students added a touch of flair by wearing cowboy hats for one song and using ribbon wands to enhance another, making the show both visually and musically engaging. Their enthusiasm and hard work made for a memorable event!

Miss Goralczyk’s 4th grade class experienced a unique hands-on learning lesson today with the help of parent Victor Botting.

Mr. Botting enjoys building birdhouses and thought students would get a kick out of it too. So he deconstructed some of the birdhouses that he’s built from scratch and brought them to school for the fourth graders to rebuild in class.

As you can see, the students had a great time and a lot of fun learning to work with their hands.

Thank you to Mr. Botting and all of our wonderful Meadow’s Edge parents who volunteer their time to help add to our students’ academic experiences.

Fourth and fifth-grade students from Bittersweet, Elm Road, Mary Frank, Meadow’s Edge, and Northpoint elementary schools recently enjoyed a musical demonstration by the Penn High School Symphonic Orchestra. This event offered the elementary students an exciting glimpse into what musical instruments may be in their future.

The demonstration began with a slow, moving piece before transitioning into a showcase of individual instruments. Penn orchestra members lined up at the front of the stage to perform brief solos. Each instrument’s unique sound and appearance were highlighted, sparking curiosity and excitement among the elementary students.

The event reached its peak when two Penn teachers brought a thrilling touch of cinematic drama to the stage. Dressed as Princess Leia and Darth Vader from Star Wars, the duo engaged in a light saber battle to the delight of the audience. In a dramatic twist, Darth Vader emerged victorious and led the orchestra in a powerful rendition of the iconic “Imperial March.” Adding to the spectacle, the string players adorned their bows with LED lights, transforming them into glowing light sabers as they performed the final number.

The demonstration not only entertained but also served as an introduction to the world of orchestral music, inspiring many young students to consider learning an instrument in the future. The Penn High School Symphonic Orchestra’s performance was a perfect blend of education and entertainment, leaving a lasting impression on its young audience.

Students took ILEARN in the Spring. The students’ results are more than just a reflection on how well they know and retained what they learned in a particular subject area. Teachers work very hard to help their students review and retain the knowledge, and when necessary interventionist educators use RtI (Response to Intervention) tools.

The Fall 2024 P-H-M Teacher Impact Awards are given to educators who had the most significant individual student growth with Spring 2024 ILEARN (grades 3-8 and high school Biology), AP Testing at Penn, and highest RtI growth.

Resource teacher Sarah Budd received her Impact Award on Dec. 18th when Principal Gary Gardner called Mrs. Budd to the media center. To her surprise, she walked in to find P-H-M Superintendent Dr. Jerry Thacker and others there to surprise her. Mrs. Budd won an Impact Award because her students have shown consistent strong growth across a variety of measures in early literacy. When viewed across her caseload of students, Mrs. Budd’s students experienced the highest growth among P-H-M’s 11 elementary schools, and were well above average for similar populations across the state. With the help of the building principals, Dr. Thacker surprised the teachers with the Impact Awards. He was accompanied by other members of P-H-M Administration Dr. Heather Short, Asst. Superintendent; Director of Professional Development Dr. Lavon Dean-Null; and Ryan Towner, Director of Literacy. P-H-M Education Foundation Executive Director Jennifer Turnblom was also on hand; PHMEF covered the cost for the beautiful awards which teachers can proudly display in their classrooms.

While all P-H-M teachers make an impact with their students, dedicated to helping them achieve personal academic success, the Impact Award shines the spotlight on educators who have helped their students achieve individual academic growth on their formative assessments over time. The first-ever Impact Awards were handed out in September 2023 and recognized the teachers with the most significant overall student growth during the 2022-2023 school year.
